Moxibustion
Moxibustion is a form of heat therapy in which dried plant materials called "moxa" are burned.
There are many different moxa techniques. The one I use most often is placing a small amount of moxa around the handle of the needle and burning it. When you receive this type of moxibustion, you will feel a pleasantly warm sensation on your skin. The intention is to warm and invigorate the flow of Qi in the body, making the needles more effective. In fact the Chinese character for acupuncture includes symbols for acupuncture and moxibustion. |
Moxa is made from the dried leafy material of Chinese mugwort (Artemesia argyi or A.vlugaris).
It is used to increase circulation and stop pain. It helps warm people who are cold, or conditions that are diagnosed as Cold in Chinese Medicine. It also has a strengthening quality and a calming effect.
Moxa produces both a smoke and scent. I use air filters in my office to help with the smoke, but
the scent tends to linger. If you are sensitive to smoke and/or scents, please let me know when you make your appointment. There are times in my schedule when I can offer a moxa-free room. Many people with chemical sensitivities have no problem with moxa, since it is a plant product, but very sensitive people may have a reaction.
I do not use moxa at Cancer Connection.
